  1. 1865-1929. Austrian chemist who devised and
  2. built an ultramicroscope in 1903. The
  3. microscope's illumination was placed at right
  4. angles to the axis. (In a conventional
  5. microscope the light source is placed
  6. parallel to the instrument's axis.)
  7. Zsigmondy's arrangement made it possible to
  8. observe gold particles with a diameter of
  9. 10-millionth of a millimetre. Nobel Prize for
